The OmniDirectional: A New Standard in Clinic Design

Tetsuya Matsumoto's Award-Winning Clinic Design Emphasizes Functionality and Aesthetics

The OmniDirectional is a unique clinic design that focuses on the specialty of the doctor, endoscopy. The design was inspired by the geometrical properties of a square, with the endoscopy room occupying the center of the clinic, both spatially and functionally. This central room is visible from the waiting room through a glazed wall behind the reception counter, creating a sense of transparency and openness.

The clinic is constructed using a wooden structure in a standard Japanese grid. The exterior is covered in newly created fiber cement panels, while the interior walls are made using OSB panels and kept without any finish to create a warm wooden atmosphere. The endoscopy room, in contrast, is finished in white wallpaper and vinyl floor, emphasizing its importance and cleanliness.

The design of the OmniDirectional clinic was a challenge due to a tight budget. However, Matsumoto and his team managed to use simple and affordable materials like wood and OSB panels to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The use of these materials not only helped to keep costs down but also added character to the space.

The clinic's layout is designed for optimal functionality. The entrance leads directly to the center of the waiting room where the reception desk is located. The waiting space gives access to the examination area to the right and the treatment area to the left. These two spaces are both connected through the endoscopy room and through the backyard, creating a full space circulation.
